The Planetarium Hypothesis is a highly speculative solution to the Fermi Paradox. It proposes that advanced civilizations may possess technology capable of manipulating what humanity observes, creating the false impression of an empty universe or hiding evidence of extraterrestrial life.

The theory proposes that a sufficiently advanced civilization could manipulate observations, control information flow, or create convincing cosmic-scale illusions. The Planetarium Hypothesis shares themes with the Zoo Hypothesis (advanced civilizations deliberately avoid contact) and with simulation theories that question perceived reality. It focuses specifically on hidden extraterrestrial civilizations rather than the idea that all of existence is simulated.
Criticisms of the Hypothesis
A major criticism is that the idea is nearly impossible to falsify or disprove. If every observation can be explained as part of the illusion, testing becomes extremely difficult. Most scientists view it as philosophical speculation rather than a scientific theory, as it lacks measurable predictions or evidence.

The Planetarium Hypothesis was first proposed by astronomer Stephen Baxter in 2001. It is not considered a mainstream scientific solution to the Fermi Paradox. Researchers generally prefer explanations based on astrophysics, biology, the rarity of intelligent life, or technological limitations.
It remains a compelling thought experiment that highlights the limits of our observations and assumptions about the universe.

The hypothesis intrigues people because it challenges the assumption that the universe appears to us exactly as it truly is. By questioning whether our observations can always be trusted, it deepens discussions about extraterrestrial life into broader questions of perception and reality.
