Nested Sims

What if a simulated civilization eventually became advanced enough to create simulations of its own?

Nested simulations extend the simulation hypothesis by proposing that artificial realities could exist inside other artificial realities. Rather than a single simulated universe, existence might consist of multiple stacked layers.

Like Russian nesting dolls, one simulated world could contain civilizations that develop the technology to create new simulations beneath them.

The Core Concept

The idea follows naturally from Nick Bostrom’s simulation argument. If advanced civilizations (or simulated civilizations) can create realistic simulations with conscious beings, then some of those civilizations might eventually do the same.

This could lead to an expanding hierarchy of realities, making it difficult to determine whether a given civilization exists in the base reality or deeper within the layers.

Key Idea: Nested simulation theory suggests that simulated worlds may themselves generate additional simulations, creating multiple layers of reality instead of a single artificial universe.

A Universe Within A Universe

Each layer could have its own rules, history, and physical laws. To inhabitants at any level, their reality would feel completely normal and authentic, with emotions, relationships, and experiences indistinguishable from base reality.

The Probability Question

If each advanced civilization creates many simulations, and some of those create further simulations, the number of conscious observers would multiply dramatically with each new layer.

In this scenario, most conscious beings would statistically exist somewhere within the nested structure rather than in the original base reality.

Could Nested Simulations Be Detected?

Some theorists suggest possible clues, such as unusual features of physics, information limits, or computational constraints at the edges of what we can observe. However, no scientific evidence currently supports the existence of nested simulations.

Important: Nested simulations remain a philosophical extension of the simulation hypothesis, with no confirmed observations or experiments.

Why Nested Simulations Matter

By expanding the idea into a vast hierarchy of realities, nested simulations raise profound questions about consciousness, technological progress, and the fundamental nature of existence.
